Does anyone know of any rock climbing places in the Los Angeles area? I don't want to have to join a gym though if they offer one.

there are several places near LA, I would go to either stoney point near chattsworth, there is bouldering and top rope stuff at stoney with a few possible leads but the sandstone is not the best quality,or big rocks at perris lake which is out by riverside, also near there is mt. robidux? I can't spell it and don't have time to dig out a guide, but it is another top rope/bouldering place, there's more bouldering at corona del mar at these interesting sea caves on the beach. add to these the areas at joshua tree and a couple of excellant places up near idllwild. there are others spots consult the link for more detailed info on so cal climbing.

There are several areas to climb in the SoCal area, depending on how far you are willing to travel. There are some preset routes developed in the Pacific Palisades/Malibu area. But they can get crowded. Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead has all sorts of hidden climbing gems, such as the Pinnacles and Deep Creek. And of course, Joshua Tree is famous for its walls and scenery. Your best bet is to go down to REI or Adventure 16 and pick up a guide to SoCal rock climbing. They will have info on where, when, and the technical aspects of the climb. I hope this helps.
