ianmeister is on the right track. Actual Rock Climbing shoes (as opposed to approach shoes or hiking boots) will not stretch more than 1/4 to 1/2 a size over their lifetime. Climbing shoes *should* be very tight, but not to the point of excessive pain. A correctly fitted shoe will be snug with no gaps. They will firmly fit around your toes, causing a slight inward curl when new. Most climbers only wear the shoes when actually climbing and keep a pair of sandals or approach shoes (which are a lightweight hiking boot) with to use when belaying or waiting for your turn to climb.

Well pain is pretty normal for new climbing shoes.. after you wear them a few weeks they will stretch and form to your feet. You'll also get callouses on your feet where you need them.

A few tricks to speeding up the "breaking in" process: Leaving "shoe horns" (I think they're called) or sticks in your shoes to stretch them front to back over night, wetting the fabric of your shoes a little to help them stretch as you climb, or even going swimming in your shoes (my friend says he does this but I'm not too sure it's a good idea.)

Don't worry, no matter what you try your shoes will feel fine within the next few weeks.

Your shoes are synthetic and also have a synthetic lining, so those puppies aren't gonna stretch much. Maybe 1/4 size over the entire life of the shoe... If you start manually stretching the shoe, you might run into problems with altering the last, or even mis-shaping the shoe.

Can you return it and go for a bigger size?

Ya, both the shoes with form / stretch to your feet and your feet will get tougher in response to the shoes.. new shoes usually start feeling better after a week or two..
